Transport – Local

On this page we look at the local public transport as well as bike sharing.

By clicking on the titles or triangles you can expand or collapse the topics one by one; the buttons below do so for all with a single click.

You have a local Ticket: The Congress Ticket

While at the IBD+ 2025 in Düsseldorf you can use the so-called “Congress Ticket” which you automatically get when booking your visit to the IBD+ and/or the program we prepared for visitors.

This ticket will be – most likely – printed on your badge. It is valid for the public transport within Düsseldorf as well as the whole operation area of the one in the Rhine-Ruhr region. It is valid for the duration of the event, i.e. from Thursday, October 23rd until Monday morning 3am, October 27th, 2025.

Make sure to carry it on you at all times. When together with Mensans, you spontaneously might want to extend your itinerary.

Deutschland Ticket

Another option is the so-called “Deutschland Ticket” offered by the Deutsche Bahn which is valid on slower trains as well as local public transport everywhere in Germany. For details, please visit the page Transport – Trains.

Local Public Transport

In Germany we have many local public transport operators – some working on their own and some in association with others.

Most of them provide their own app for smart phones allowing you to look up connections and schedules. Furthermore, you can usually purchase tickets online using their apps.

For the local public transport in Düsseldorf please visit the web site of Rheinbahn.

The other operator of interest is the regional transport association for Düsseldorf and the Rhine-Ruhr region with the web site Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR).
Their mobile app is available on here (scroll down): VRR App.

Travel the eezy way!

Checking prices and tickets seems too complicated? Then simply use eezy.

You can be mobile throughout North Rhine-Westphalia (Nordrhein-Westphalen) without any knowledge of tickets or fares. How?

When you start your journey, simply click the “Check in now” button in the app, confirm from where you start and off you go. No matter how often you change trains, you only need to check out again at the end of your journey.

Don’t forget to check out at the end of the trip! The fare is then automatically calculated based on a fixed basic price as well as the distance “as the crow flies” between start and destination – regardless of the actual journey route taken.

To use eezy, you need the Rheinbahn App. In addition to intelligent timetable information, this also offers you a map function with detailed display of footpaths. This means you travel not just from stop to stop, but from door to door.

Important warning – avoid paying fines

When using public transportation in general, beware of this:

Always buy and validate your ticket before boarding public transport (trains, trams, buses). In case you use an app for your tickets, ensure you have enough battery left. Make sure to always carry your ticket with you. Ticket inspectors are common and fines for fare evasion are high.
There are some exceptions with ticket vending machines on board a tram or underground, but don’t expect them anywhere.

Taxi and Uber

You can certainly take a taxi instead of using normal public tansport with busses, trams, or subways. Usually you can pay with credit cards in a taxi, but you want to make sure before starting the ride.

While Uber does exist in Germany, it is pretty uncommon – you want to consider taking normal public transport.

Please note that we will supply guides for most events that will accompany you from the Maritim hotel to the event location so you need to hassle yourself figuring out how to get there 🙂

Bike sharing or renting

Instead of walking or using public transport you can use one of the shared bicycles offered:

Alternatively, you can rent a bike at Zukunftswerkstatt Düsseldorf:

  • The main outlet is located at Düsseldorf Central Station,
a second outlet at Apollo-Platz (right by the Rhine at the „Landtag/Kniebrücke“ tram stop).
  • Men’s and women’s bikes as well as those for children are available.
  • Child seats, tandems and pedelecs, trailers for the very little ones can be booked.
  • For current opening hours, rates and reservations see website.

E-Scooters

E-Scooters are available. Payment (check the price differences!!) via apps of the service provider.

Rheinbahn offers one app that combines all providers at Rheinban app.

Important rules (also check special provider rules on parking etc.):

  • Max. speed 20km/h.
  • Only one person is allowed per E-Scooter.
  • Use the cyclist path – if none is in place, you must use the street and not the sideway!
  • You must not drive in pedestrian zones or on sideways, except you see the lower part of this sign:

  • You must not drive side by side, but behind each other.
  • When taking a turn, you must give a hand signal in the same way as you would do when riding a bike.
  • E-Scooters usually are not allowed in public transport.
  • You are not obliged to wear a helmet.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Same dangers and fines as with any other vehicle!
  • Mutual respect is key, as always! Despite all the “must not’s”: Have fun!

E-Motorbike

In case you want something a bit more comfortable and potentially faster you can try a small E-Motorbike at Stadtwerke Düsseldorf.
