WiFi

Some popular places where you can use free WiFi in Düsseldorf are the Rhine promenade, the Königsallee shopping area, the Old Town and sometimes other public places. You can also find WiFi in cafés, restaurants and even on public transport.

Be aware that speeds and reliability can vary, and sometimes it is not the most trustworthy connection. Maybe you want to use a VPN.

Public WiFi Düsseldorf Airport
  • Select the "DUS Airport Free Wi-Fi" network.
  • Open a web browser and enter a web address.
  • You may be asked to accept the airport's terms of use.

Mobile Phone and Data

Compatibility: Make sure your phone is unlocked and compatible with European networks that use GSM frequencies.

Using Your Home SIM Card: We recommend that you contact your mobile phone provider before your departure from home.

Roaming: Ask your mobile phone provider about international roaming options. Many providers offer international plans or daily/weekly/monthly roaming packages. Be aware of the costs associated with roaming.

Getting a German SIM Card: Be aware of the costs associated with roaming. You might want to switch off roaming before departure until you have a German SIM card.

  • Availability: Prepaid SIM cards can easily be purchased at airports, electronic stores, supermarkets, convenience shops (also at petrol stations), and dedicated mobile phone stores.
  • Registration: Due to regulations, you must register your SIM card with a valid ID, such as a passport or identity card (e.g. driving licences are not accepted). This can usually be done at the point of purchase or online.

Upon arrival at Düsseldorf Airport, you can purchase German prepaid SIM cards at various points within the terminal, such as duty-free shops, convenience and electronics stores, newsstands or mobile phone stores.

Akia is a mobile phone shop and the most reliable option for purchasing a German SIM card at Düsseldorf Airport. They offer a wide range of prepaid SIM cards from various providers. You can find Akia in the airport's shopping area. There you will also find many items you might need: charging cables, memory cards, smartphones, headphones, speakers, power banks, world travel adapters and a wide range of mobile phone accessories, as presented on the Akia web site. Akia is open daily from 8am to 11pm

Purchase Options and Tariffs

Major Mobile Network Operators
  • Deutsche Telekom / T-Mobile: Known for excellent network coverage and high-speed data – a little bit more expensive than the other options.
  • Vodafone Germany: Offers extensive coverage and competitive pricing.
  • O2 Germany (Telefónica): Often the most budget-friendly option with decent coverage and good data plans.
  • Lycamobile and Lebara: Popular among international travellers because of their low rates for international calls.

Choosing a Prepaid Plan
  • Look for tariffs with sufficient data volume, especially if you need to stay connected for work, navigation, or social media.
  • Most tariffs include a certain number of national calls and text messages. If you want to make calls abroad, check for special international tariffs and offers.
  • Pay attention to the validity period of the prepaid offers. Some of these tariffs are valid for 30 days or 4 weeks, while others might offer different durations.
